In Down Came the Rain: My Journey through Postpartum Depression, Brooke Shields talks candidly about her own personal experience with postpartum depression after the birth of her first child. It is an inspiring story for all mothers.
This is a very courageous tale from a well-known actress. It could not be easy for her to divulge her innermost feelings about such an intimate subject, the birth of her child, but she does it candidly. Many women, whether they have suffered from postpartum depression or not, will connect with this story, as its main focus is the overwhelming demands of a newborn that no new mother can be prepared for.
Brooke tells of her struggle to get pregnant, her traumatic birth experience, and then, the unexpected long battle with postpartum depression she could not admit to having and knew little about. Once she admitted to herself that she needed help, she was able to find it and begin the road to recovery.
Telling her story, Brooke succeeds in bringing a very common problem into the light. Too often, women hide the truth. They are embarrassed and afraid to admit that everything isn’t perfect. Having a child is a life-altering event and it does not always go as smoothly as one hope’s it will. Many will find comfort in knowing that they are not alone and their condition is treatable.
Despite the serious subject matter, this book was a wonderful read. Informative, thought-provoking, and revealing. Postpartum depression should not remain a hidden disease, the more it is talked about, the more that can be done to help those women who do suffer from it and ease their pain and bring the joy back to motherhood.
